Weekender: Nic B-C, band manager and VW restorer, 44

‘I’m always wearing my trusted black and red hooped jumper – Dennis the Menace is lurking inside me’

Once a punk, always a punk. It’s about being different from the crowd. After teaching children with special needs since 1993, I gave it up a few years back to indulge my hobby of restoring classic VWs. I also grew my mohican. I’m still the same person I was when I had a short back and sides, it’s just blue and longer.

People want to have their picture taken with me. I’m always wearing my trusted black and red hooped jumper from SpankDennis the Menace is lurking inside me.

I’m also a band manager. My main band, Black Sun, are similar to Oasis lyrics-wise, but the sound is 70s psychedelia. I go to two or three gigs a week. I love the Cluny in Newcastle. It’s attached to a pub that serves real ale and nice food, and lots of big bands do secret gigs. New York Dolls, Kate Nash and Pete Doherty have played there. They put a fake name on the bill, so you have to keep your ear to the ground.

VWs are a lifelong passion. They’re for free spirits. I now run the Durham Dubbers – the biggest VW club in the north of England. We have monthly meets and a festival with bands all day and cooking in the campers. It’s a laid-back get-together.

I don’t have weekends these days. Being self-employed, every day merges into another. I don’t mind, really – I just drift along.
