Letters: Supplying the facts about binge drinking

Tackling binge drinking means changing the UK’s alcohol culture. All of us – young adults, parents, the government, the health community, the third sector and the drinks industry – have a role to play. And the drinks industry recognises the need to play its rightful part in helping to solve this issue. Alcohol producers and retailers are committed to harnessing our skills to enable people to make better choices about alcohol, take greater personal responsibility and drive culture change. In 2011, almost 60 on-trade and off-trade companies and producers will come together to support the third year of alcohol education charity Drinkaware’s £100m five-year campaign, to challenge the acceptability and desirability of drunkenness among young adults and reduce binge drinking.

The “Why let good times go bad?” campaign produces results. Following last year’s campaign, 77% of the young adults questioned said they had adopted the campaign tips. These figures prove that, by encouraging people to change rather than dictating to them, we can both improve the outcome for society and respect people’s autonomy.

This year, activity aims to reach young adults through the media channels they rely on, using a specially designed mobile application to prompt behaviour change. The campaign is about showing that enjoying a drink is acceptable, but drunkenness is not. By working together we aim to ensure young adults, now and in the future, have the facts to enable them to enjoy alcohol in moderation without harming themselves or others.
